Police secure two good convictions

JOBURG – Police urge community to work with them to get rid of criminals.

Spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station, Captain Xoli Mbele has hailed his investigators for a job well done in ensuring convictions of two accused persons in two different cases.

In the first case, Mbele explained that Samukelisiwe Kubheka, a 44-year-old female was found guilty of fraud and she was sentenced to five years imprisonment in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.

Relating events that led to the arrest of the accused, Mbele said Kubheka was arrested in February this year, after purchasing a pair of shoes with a fake R100 note from a hawker. “The 30-year-old male hawker gave her R50 change, then he realised that it was a fake R100 note. He ran after the female and she denied giving him a fake note.”

The accused’s wallet was searched and R600 in fake R100 notes were found. The hawker then contacted the police and the woman was apprehended.

In the second conviction secured, Mbele said Masilo Matheka, a 31-year-old male was found guilty of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He was sentenced to nine years imprisonment. For the possession of an unlicensed firearm he will serve six years imprisonment and three years for possession of ammunition. According to Mbele, the accused was arrested in February last year. “Police were busy with their routine crime prevention duties at Wanderers taxi rank when they saw a suspicious male carrying a school bag. They stopped and searched him, and police recovered a firearm with 14 live rounds. The suspect failed to produce a licence to possess a firearm.”

Mbele urged community members to give police more information concerning people carrying unlicensed firearms. “By so doing, we will be saving more lives and people won’t be robbed of their belongings,” he pleaded.

He concluded by saying a good working relationship between the community and the police can combat cases where firearms are used to commit crimes.
