For most motorists, negotiating a traffic circle is not an issue but for some, a traffic circle seems to be the most confusing law in the history of traffic laws.

Getting through a traffic circle can be a nightmare at times, especially when motorists are not patient.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said right of way must be given to the person approaching from the right who is already in the circle.
“Other than that, courtesy must prevail so that the vehicle which gets to the circle first has the right of way,” said Chief Supt Minnaar.
What to remember:
- When you arrive at a traffic circle, traffic that is approaching from the right has the right of way, whether it is peak or off-peak hours.
- Just because you have the right of way and you know how a traffic circle works does not mean everyone knows, therefore it is important to always apply caution.
- Always watch out for other traffic because some motorists fail to use indicators and some might not indicate on time.
- Wait until you have the right of way, unless the motorist coming from the right gives you the courtesy of going.
