WATCH: Water wasted in Observatory

Observatory – Residents are concerned by the recent water cuts and fear that leaks outside their control will be billed to them.

With Joburg Water reducing water supply to communities, residents are concerned about water wastage outside of their residences.

Last week, the entity reduced water supply in certain areas in Johannesburg in response to residents’ failure to cut down on their water consumption. However, residents have become aware of water wastage outside of their control. Carl Rijnvis, a resident of Observatory, was concerned about a water leak that had been wasting water for more than three weeks in Doorn Street.

“The water has been running down the road. Residents in the street have logged calls to get it fixed but with no luck. I have called myself and received a reference number, but it only got fixed on 13 October after a three-week wait,” said Rijnvis.

“The leak was fixed 18 months ago, however, the same leak was at it again, oozing water out from the tar road. We were concerned as residents because we are facing water restrictions and we were told if we waste water we will pay for it. Who is going to pay for this water?”

Residents are urged to report water leaks to the water utility.
