Sebone to perform at Festival of Lights

"He realised that the arts gave him peace and the focus of knowing his purpose."

When Djembe Sebone performs at the Edenvale City Improvement District’s Festival (ECID) of Lights and Street Carnival, the audience will be taken back to their tribal roots.

Ms Katy Young, the public relations officer and events coordinator for ECID, said Mr Sebone will spread the message of humility and the spirit of togetherness at the festival.

“ECID is honoured to host Sebone, aka King Bzorobzarabza, at the ECID Festival Lights and Street Carnival,” said Ms Young.

Ms Young said through his music, Mr Sebone hopes it will teach the audience to reconnect with their past so people can move forward with their heads held high.

Ms Young said Mr Sebone’s career started when he became a drummer and facilitator for Drumcafe.

“Drumcafe believed in his talent so much that they recorded a CD called Mama with him and other members,” said Ms Young.

During his music career, Mr Sebone has played alongside Hugh Masikela, Busi Mholongo, Vusi Mahlasela and Jabu Khanyile.

Ms Young said he has a wide range of talents, which include being an indigenous instrumentalist, a singer, a composer, gumboot dancer and poet.

“He has also taken his stilt walking, dancing, drumming and marimba talents across the globe and back,” said Ms Young.

She said Mr Sebone has played in London, Paris, Belgium, America, Australia and Asia. According to Ms Young, Mr Sebone’s life turned around when he started working in arts centres with children and the youth.

“He realised that the arts gave him peace and the focus of knowing his purpose,” said Ms Young.

“Be sure to let the power of the King touch your soul and as the Zulu saying goes ‘ïnjobo enhle ithungelwa ebandla’ , join us in working together and sharing ideas joyously at the ECID Festival of Lights and Street Carnival on November 5,” said Ms Young.
