Property owners must get rid of invasive plants

Every land owner has a duty of care to remove invasive species from their land.

Government legislation regarding the eradication of invasive plants now places responsibility upon the property owners as well.

Mr Warren Schmidt, of Invasive Species Specialists, will be the guest speaker at the Modderfontein Conservation Society’s October evening meeting to advise and discuss this subject.

The meeting will take place at the Modderfontein Town Hall, located at 1 Casino Road, at 7:30pm on October 20.

The Environmental Affairs Department said recently that South African municipalities would have until October 1, 2016,6 to outline their plan for controlling invasive species on all public land in the city.

“Like municipalities, every land owner in the country also has to remove invasive species on the land that they own,” the Department said.

“Invasive species are now deemed a legal responsibility to every property owner in the country and the legislation will impact on estate agents and conveyancers.”

Every land owner has a duty of care to remove invasive species from their land.

The new law also states that every seller of a property has to inform the buyer of the property of any invasive species on the property.

The government wants estate agents, in the future, to advertise clean properties.
