Eastleigh Scout group turns 50

"Scouting made a big difference in my life so I decided to stay involved and put in what I got out."

The Eastleigh Scout group is turning 50 years old this year.

Mr Peter Sequeira, the Troop Scouter of the Eastleigh Scout Group, said the Scout group is still going strong.

Mr Sequeira, who has been an Edenvale resident since 1969, became the Troop Scouter for the group in 2015.

“I have always been involved in Scouting, ever since I was invited by my neighbour,” said Mr Sequeira.

He said while he was growing up, Scouting played a significant part in his life.

“Scouting helps build character in young people. It helps children make friends. I look at what Scouting did for me and I think that people can benefit from it,” said Mr Sequeira.

“Scouting made a big difference in my life so I decided to stay involved and put in what I got out,” said Mr Sequeira.

Some of the events the Sea Scout group takes part in include:

r Gig adventure, a long distance rowing race that sees teams of of six or seven members rowing over 50km on the Vaal Dam over a weekend.

  •  Canoe polo.
  •  Canoe river races and sailing regattas.

Mr Sequeira said in 2015 the Eastleigh Sea Scout Group did well in a number of events and won the canoe polo tournament that was held that year.

To celebrate turning 50 years old the Scout group will be hosting a fundraising event on October 15.

The Scouts will be showing off there pioneering skills during the event.
