The water was running for five hours – resident

"It is a complete nightmare."

Second Avenue residents made the most of the water flowing down the road after a water pipe burst on September 27.

The burst pipe was situated at the corner of Second Avenue and Hendrik Potgieter Street and sprayed water roughly a metre into the air.

Residents in the area could be seen collecting the wasted water to use on their gardens.

“We are making the most of the situation,” said Mr Kevin Vlietman, a resident who was collecting water.

An Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) employee attending to the leak said the municipality was temporarily fixing the leak by putting clamps on the leaking pipe.

The clamps were used to stem the flow of water. It is unclear what led to the water leak.

The NEWS was made aware of the burst water pipe when a concerned community member phoned to report the leak.

Ms Sandra Hamilton, a Second Avenue resident, said the water was running for about five hours.

“I phoned the municipality to report it,” said Ms Hamilton

She said she was made aware of the leak at about 11.30am.

Clr Heather Hart of ward 18 said that recently there have been a number of incidents involving broken pipes in both ward 18 and 19.

Clr Harts said recently she had three similar issues in her ward, ward 18.

She said contract workers digging on the pavements to lay fibre optic cables accidentally strike the water pipe while digging, which results in leaks.

“It is a complete nightmare,” said Clr Hart.

A request for comment was sent to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality on September 27, with a request for comment by September 29 by 3pm.

At the time of going to print, no comment had been received.
