#YourStory – Passionate about the community

"We cannot be seen to be accepting when government resources are being misused."

Ms Nomphelo Zozo is a community leader at Jumpas informal settlement.

She is also a ward 118 committee member and a member of the Cleveland Community Police Forum (CPF).

She has been living in Jumpas for four years.

“The informal settlement has really changed since I moved here. There was a high rate of crime in this area. The majority of residents were misusing government resources. I could not just sit back. I wanted Jumpas to be a better place for us all,” said Ms Zozo.

“Every time I see a burst pipe, leakage and rubbish being dumped, I report it to the ward 118 councillor. We do something about it to keep our community clean,” she said.

“I listen to the views of the community and hold regular public meetings with all community members. I report to the councillor when I identify challenges the residents are facing,” said Ms Zozo.

“The community must be active and keep on fighting the good fight. We cannot be seen to be accepting when government resources are being misused. I do not get paid for the work I do. It is not about the money but helping the community I live in,” said Ms Zozo.
