Windscreen washers irk resident

Mr De Bruin said the residents and motorists driving through the area should help the community to get rid of windscreen washers.

Bedfordview resident and community leader Mr Leon de Bruin has urged residents and motorists to stop giving money to windscreen washers at intersections.

Mr De Bruin is the brains behind the recent marches aimed at ridding the area of windscreen washers.

He said the only reason motorists are still exposed to windscreen washers is that someone still gives them money.

“As long as people are still creating a market for these guys we will never be able to get rid of them fully. We need our community to work with us and to ensure no money is given to these guys. This is the only way we will win this war,” said Mr De Bruin.

He said residents should instead support legitimate charity organisations, instead of giving money to windscreen washers and beggars.

“We often receive reports about windscreen washers intimidating and assaulting motorists. The police can do everything in their power to fight this. We can make as much noise as we want, but at the end of the day, the honour is on our fellow men and women to stop this trade,” said Mr De Bruin.

Residents recently took to social media to express their concerns over allegations and reports that the men at the intersections refill their bottles with urine.

“The question here is; is there anybody out there who is prepared to have their windscreen washed with urine? I hope not. So, let’s all pull together and do something,” said one resident.

Mr De Bruin said the residents and motorists driving through the area should help the community to get rid of windscreen washers.

He said the residents would engage in marches more often to raise awareness on what residents have referred to as a serious problem.
