Clr Zulu ready to serve ward 65

He said ward 65 is one of the most challenged areas when it comes to service delivery and that needs to change.

“Living in Malvern and teaching at Denver Primary exposed me to the deep needs facing the community of ward 65,” said Clr Lindani Zulu.

Clr Zulu has not always been into politics but his passion for people led to him running in the municipal elections.

A teacher by profession, Clr Zulu said he is well informed about his area because as a teacher he meets pupils from different households. This allows him to understand the area better.

“As a teacher, you are like a second parent to your pupils. As you get to know them better, you get to understand where they come from and the challenges the parents face on a day-to-day basis,” said Clr Zulu.

Clr Zulu is originally from Ulundi in KwaZulu-Natal.

He moved to Johannesburg in 2000.

“I came to Joburg for an education and a better life. I studied a Bachelor in Education degree at Unisa, because of my love for children,” said Clr Zulu.

His last teaching post was at Denver Primary School.

He said getting into politics was influenced by his involvement in the community.

“Having lived in Denver Hostel, I was concerned about the challenges faced by hostel dwellers and the informal settlement in the area. I got to understand the needs facing communities in ward 65, which covers Mangolongolo, the George Gogh Hostel and parts of Malvern, Cleveland and Kensington,” said Clr Zulu.

He said ward 65 is one of the most challenged areas when it comes to service delivery and that needs to change.

“One major priority for me will be to try and get more services into the informal settlements as we cannot continue to have people suffering.

“With the cooperation of the community and officials from the likes of Pikitup, the Joburg Road Agency and City Power, I will strive to improve service delivery to ward 65,” said Clr Zulu.

He said the youth of ward 65 are faced with a number of challenges and need upliftment. He believes a community and recreation centre would make a difference.

“A community and recreation centre, which is desperately needed to assist in uplifting the community, is needed in the area. I intend petitioning Council for this to happen.

“I will also be working closely with the JMPD, the Cleveland and Jeppe SAPS, together with the respective sector managers, to assist in the fight against crime and drugs which are destroying the youth, “said Clr Zulu.

He said substances abuse is a major challenge in the area and he is planning to engage with the Liquor Board and the SAPS about the number of illegal taverns.

“To my knowledge taverns have been issued with letters of authorisation even when they do not meet conditions set out in the Liquor Act. Alcohol is causing an escalation in crime, including domestic violence, and this cannot be left unaddressed,” said Clr Zulu.

He said as a first-time councillor he still has a lot to learn and he is ready to serve the community.
