‘Be proud of your country’ – Dr Mncube

Dr Mncube was born and bred in Edenvale.

Bedfordview resident, Dr Stephen Mncube has urged South Africans to celebrate Heritage Month with love for each other.

Dr Mncube, who went into exile in the early 1960s, said citizens of the rainbow nation should be proud of how far they have come post democracy.

The 75-year-old said what South Africa achieved in 22 years many developed countries would not be able to do.

“While celebrating Heritage Month, let’s embrace our cultures and languages. May we teach our children our history. May they know it and be proud of it. This month also happens to be Tourism Month.

“There is no reason why we should worry about going on holidays abroad. Explore your own first. We have a rich offering in this country and a lot of destinations to be proud of. Developed countries don’t rely on international tourists, but instead they visit their own destinations,” said Dr Mncube.

Dr Mncube was born and bred in Edenvale.

He is the former chairperson of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa).

Last Saturday South Africa celebrated Heritage Day and National Braai Day.
