Running club assists the needy

“Our generous actions can make the world a better place for all,”

Members of Greenstone Hill Running Club (GHRC) gathered at the Edenvale Police Station to prepare for the distribution of items of food and clothing to the needy in Edenvale.

On the evening of September 7 GHRC club members were escorted by two SAPS vehicles so the 30 bags of groceries, clothing and shoes for men, women and children could be distributed.

Vice-chairperson of the running club, Mr Woshen Naidoo, said the running club initiated the charity drive to make a positive contribution to the less fortunate in the Edenvale area.

Mr Naidoo said the club, with the assistance of community members and the Greenstone Virgin Active Gym, was able to collect:

  •  Food
  •  Baby food and goods.
  •  Clothes for adults, children and babies
  •  Foam mattresses
  •  Blankets

“The club has always had a strong social element and felt this initiative would be an ideal opportunity to give back to the local community,” said Mr Naidoo.

Mr Naidoo said the group stopped at numerous locations where the needy were known to be.

“The endless calls of ‘Thank you’ from these people touched the hearts of the GHRC members who felt blessed as they handed out the items,” said Mr Naidoo.

Mr Naidoo said the club members were energised by the words of appreciation.

“The immense satisfaction derived from the charity drive on that evening has encouraged the members of GHRC to commit to many more community projects of this nature in future,” said Mr Naidoo.

He said the running club learned that everyone can make a difference no matter how big or how small the contributions may be.

“Our generous actions can make the world a better place for all,” said Mr Naidoo.
