Crime hot-spots discussed at sector meeting

We cannot stress enough the importance of neighbourhood watches and working together with SAPS it makes a huge difference

Sector 1 Sub-Forum had its meeting last week Wednesday at Mandeville Sports Centre, where crime hot-spots were discussed.

The community was provided with tips on how to avoid being a victim of crime.

“We have had issues in sector 1 and the community needs to be aware. There is an ongoing concern especially with pupils who walk home. Recently we had to make a citizen’s arrest. I and a community member apprehended two suspects who were trying to rob a schoolboy at knifepoint of a cellular phone,” said Jeppe CPF chairperson, Mr Zola Dambula.

7th Avenue will be setting up a street committee on October 1.

Neighbourhood watch groups were discussed and community members were urged to always contact the police.

“We cannot stress enough the importance of neighbourhood watches and working together with SAPS as it makes a huge difference,” said Mr Dambula.

Mr Dambula also added that the community needs to go back to basics because that will prevent community members becoming victims of crime.

He advised parents and community members to create awareness on street robberies involving schoolchildren.

“Residents at home are urged to look out for the schoolchildren in the morning and afternoon – stand outside by the gate and check that all is okay. Parents can provide schoolchildren with a whistle to blow in case they are being targeted.

“Children must not make their cell phones and earphones visible to perpetrators. Most importantly walk in groups and don’t idle around the area and be alert of the surroundings and become street smart,” said Mr Dambula
