Unite around the fire

Each year the initiative has called on South Africans to unite around fires, share in their heritage and wave the flag.

The National Braai Day initiative is aimed at positioning National Heritage Day as South Africa’s annual day of celebration.

Each year the initiative has called on South Africans to unite around fires, share in their heritage and wave the flag.

And each year that is exactly what South Africans do: they braai on a day which the government has set this day aside for all South Africans to celebrate their rich heritage.

Across race, language, region and religion, South Africans share one common heritage.

It is called many things: shisa nyama, braai and ukosa, to name a few.

Although the ingredients may differ, the one thing that never changes is that when South Africans have something to celebrate we light fires and prepare great feasts.

We liken this initiative to annual celebrations cherished by other leading nations of the world such as Thanksgiving for Americans, St Patrick’s Day for the Irish, Bastille Day for the French and Australia Day for Australians.

Regardless of the weather, the rest of the world can rest assured that South Africans will braai on September 24.
