As part of its heritage month activities the Modderfontein Conservation Society (MCS) conducted walks around the village’s heritage precinct on Saturday, September 3.

A full complement of 50 people were led through the area by Mr Keith Martin and Mr Robbie Vermont. Each of them led separate groups of 25 people.

The tour around the precinct included views of historic buildings dating from 1896, and interesting anecdotes about the people and what happens in the village.

It also included information on why and how Modderfontein contributed to the prosperity of the region as a whole.

The society’s Heritage Month evening talk will revolve around a near neighbour, Kensington, and will be presented by Ms Cynthia Piercey and Isabella Pingle of the I Love Kensington Association.

The talk will take place in the Modderfontein Town Hall at 7:30pm on September 15. The MCS plans further heritage walks for May 20, next year.

This is the closest Saturday to International Museum Day (IMD) on May 18.

The theme for IMD 2017 will be Museums and contested histories – saying the unspeakable in museums.
