Mortar round recovered from scrapyard

"Once again we want to urge community members not to dispose of these items themselves,"

On August 29 a practice mortar round was recovered by Edenvale SAPS, Firearms, Liquor and Second Hand Goods Unit (Flash) in Eastleigh.

According to Captain Jean Olckers, spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, the mortar was found on the morning of August 29 at a scrapyard in Eastleigh.

“After a call was received from the scrapyard, police officers went to the scrapyard and found the mortar which the owner of the business identified between pieces of scrap metal,” said Capt Olckers.

He said the Bomb Disposal Unit came to remove the mortar.

Capt Olckers said community members must not handle explosive items at all.

“Once again we want to urge community members not to dispose of these items themselves. If these items are found community members must contact their sector vehicle, 10111 or 0860 010111,” said Capt Olckers.
