Pupils from Edenvale High School recently took part in a community development tour to the Tibetan community in exile, in India.
On the tour the pupils, in grades nine to 11, had the opportunity to:
- Teach Tibetan refugees English.
- Engage with schoolchildren who’ve never encountered Westerners.
- Learn from monks who’d been imprisoned in Chinese prisons.
- Be taught by Tibetan doctors, yogis and other wise men.
- Pupils who went on the tour were Ashleigh Ross, Layla Howa, Roxanne Peacock, Kayla Reynolds and Sabrina Schutte.
“Our white scarves, having been blessed by a monk for safe travels, will stay hung up in our rooms as a reminder of the strength that we saw and have in ourselves.
“This trip was not about us, but the people we met. They gave so much to us all priceless gifts of kindness, smiles, knowledge and extensive insight into the world and life,” said Edenvale’s
Mr Klasie Wessels of Streetschool, who coordinated and supervised the initiative.
Edenvale High School intends to arrange a similar tour to India in 2017.
