Community expresses shock after young mother’s death

Community members have expressed their shock at the death of a mother of two following a shooting in Edenvale Avenues.

Mrs Vanessa Dreyer died following a shooting on August 31.

Captain Jean Olckers, spokesperson of the Edenvale SAPS, said the murder of Mrs Dreyer is currently being investigated.

He said Mrs Dreyer and husband, Quintin,were in their car, which was in a driveway, when they were blocked in by a white Mercedes Benz.

“Armed suspects attempted to rob them. It is alleged that a shooting took place between the robbers and her husband,” said Capt Olckers.

Capt Olckers said Mrs Dreyer was shot and rushed to the Edenvale Medicross but died as result of her injuries.

Colonel Robbie Roberts, Acting Station Commander of the Edenvale Police Station, said the police cannot currently give out more information about the case.

He confirmed that the case is under investigation and that more information will be released at a later stage.

Numerous messages of condolences expressing the community’s shock and anger were made on social media.

A post made to the Laerskool M W De Wet Primary Facebook page by Mr Jaqucez Heywood, chairperson of the school Ggoverning body expressed the school’s condolences to the family and loved ones of Mrs Dreyer.

In his message Mr Heywood said Mrs Dreyer was a helpful parent at the school who never hesitated to help out.

“Vanessa played a big role in the successful Welpie Rugby supporters group where she was always ready to assist,” said Mr Heywood.

He said her husband, Quinton, and their two children were in the school’s prayers.

“We pray that God will carry you during this difficult time,” said Mr Heywood.

Community members took to Facebook to share their messages of support to the family.

“This is awful news. Edenvale used to be one of the best places to live in for many years but it is now becoming a nightmare. Condolences to the family of the deceased and my thoughts are also with all who were involved, it is such a traumatic experience for all concerned.”
