Maine brings home coveted Porsche award

He said in order to win the competition he needed to strip the car of its engine and clean it.

This year’s overall winner of Porsche Club South Africa’s (PCSA) Concours is a Bedfordview resident.

Mr Martin Maine and his Air-cooled Carrera 911 type 993 took home the trophy on June 5 at Emperors Palace.

Mr Maine has been a member of the club for over 20 years and has owned 14 Porsche cars in his life but was yet to win the competition which is the highest accolade in the ranks of the PCSA.

He said to win the competition he needed to strip the car of its engine and clean it.

“It’s not just about the cleanliness. Just a car wash is not good enough. I had to take the engine apart, do an ultrasound cleaning. Every nut and bolt was glass-bead blasted. I also used Co2 ice blasting to make sure the car meets the standard of the judges, some of whom came from Germany,” said Mr Maine.

He said the cleaning process took him six weeks to complete and he spent two more weeks putting the engine back together.

“I did all that over the Christmas holidays last year. It was one of the most rewarding times,” he said.

Mr Maine said the competition is judged on cleanliness and originality, history as well as age.

He said the older the car, the better its chance of winning.

His wife, Mrs Jenny, is also a Porsche fanatic.

“She broke the record as the fastest Porsche driver after she clocked at 302km/h [legally] in the Eastern Cape,” said Mr Maine.

Mr Maine is an engineer in mining equipment and high speed water cutting.

In his spare time, Mr Maine said he enjoys wildlife photography.

“At times my wife and I drive to the wild and camp on top of our bakkie. Those are the moments we most enjoy,” he said.
