Home in dire need of help

"The care givers at this home are all volunteers."

Duduzwane Home is a non-profit organisation based in Malvern, and it is pleading for donations from local community members and businesses.

“We don’t have transport for our patients in case of an emergency. We rely on dialling emergency numbers and it takes long for the ambulance to arrive,” said the organisation’s project manager Ms Eva Thavhana.

Founded in 2004 by the late Ms Duduzile Zwane and Mr Thulani Mngomezulu, the home caters for up to 20 adults and children in different stages of the HIV/Aids disease.

“We also care for people who are infected with TB,” said Ms Thavhana.

“It started as a project at Cleveland Police Station, handing out food parcels to the less fortunate. In 2004 the Akona Foundation donated the house. It was the most wonderful day for the community of Malvern. The home started with only seven patients. We currently take care of 20 patients,” said Ms Thavhana.

“We don’t get any funding from the government. The caregivers at this home are all volunteers.

“Sometimes they don’t come to work as they face financial problems. We rely on students to take care of our patients. The community of Malvern donates food parcels now and then so that we can feed our patients. We do run out of food sometimes. I am asking for donations from businesses and community members in the area,” said Ms Thavhana.
