SA team brings home award

"This was an opportunity of a lifetime,"

Two Edenglen High School pupils, Bianca van Reen and Annas Patel recently represented South Africa at the 4×4 in Schools World Championships held in London.

The competition was aimed to be a youth technology challenge and saw the South African team, Team Rhino, competing against 40 international teams.

Team Rhino, which represents rhino conservation, received the judge’s Special Award at the competition for engineering for conservation purposes.

The South African team said the competition was a challenge that changed their views and developed skills in a way that no other competition could have provided.

The competition exposed teams to different cultures and allowed the members to gain more knowledge about engineering.

In the competition, teams had to design shells for a 4×4 remote controlled car, present a verbal presentation and present portfolios of the team.

The teams also had the opportunity to drive on a 4×4 technical course and tow a trailer with a car.

The two Edenvale pupils participated in a four-member team alongside Bevan Roets and Matthew Cornelius, pupils from Maritzburg College.
