Two murders in one week

The suspects were found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunitions.

A man and woman were murdered in the Joburg East area over the past week in two separate incidents.

The man was killed in Betrams on July 31, while the woman, Mrs Nontokozo Zulu, was murdered in Malvern on August 1.

The spokesperson for the Jeppe SAPS, Warrant Officer Richard Munyai and Constable Mpho Mashakane, the spokesperson for the Cleveland SAPS, spoke about the two cases.

W/O Munyai said three men shot and killed the man during a hijacking at the corner of Liddle and Terrance roads.

He said the suspects were arrested after a high speed police chase.

“While the suspects were fleeing the scene, police officers on patrol spotted them and became suspicious. When they tried to stop them, they drove off and the police officers gave chase. The suspects crashed the hijacked car onto a bridge and all three of them exited and ran on foot,” said W/O Munyai.

He said the police arrested two of the suspects after chasing them on foot.

“The third suspect is still at large and is being sought by police,” said W/O Munyai.

W/O Munyai said the suspects were found in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

He said the suspects were charged with murder, car hijacking and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

At the time of going to press, the men were due to appear in court.

Const Mashakane said the 34-year-old Mrs Zulu was shot as she arrived at her destination along 21st Street.

“Eyewitnesses reported that when the deceased arrived at 21st Street, the suspects who were travelling in a white Toyota Corolla with unknown registration number plates, started shooting at her. She ran back to her car where she was shot again. The police found five cartridges at the scene,” said Const Mashakane.

She said only the victim’s phone was taken.

“No arrests have been made and investigations are continuing. Anyone with information can contact the Cleveland SAPS on 011 677-5748 or 10111,” said Const Mashakane.
