ATM fraudster posing as security guard is caught

He added that when the resident inserted her bank card into the ATM machine it appeared to swallow the card.

The Edenvale SAPS appeals to members of the community who may have fallen victim to card skimming and theft at shopping centres to come forward.

This follows the arrest of a local security guard for his involvement in stealing money from a resident who was tricked into thinking an ATM swallowed her bank card.

“The resident lodged a case with the Edenvale SAPS after she visited a shopping centre in the area to withdraw money,” said Edenvale SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Jean Olckers.

He added that when the resident inserted her bank card into the ATM it appeared to swallow the card.

Shortly afterwards a security officer employed at the centre offered to assist her but both were unable to retrieve the card.

“Before long the resident realised that the money was stolen from her account and she opened a case with the Edenvale SAPS,” W/O Olckers said.

He added that the case was handed to Detective Constable Seshoka for investigation.

“In the docket the victim stated that she suspected involvement of the security officer and through further investigations this was found to be true,” W/O Olckers said.

The security officer was arrested and detained at the Edenvale Police Station.

Anyone who may have fallen victim to similar cases in Edenvale are asked to contact Const Seshoka on 011 553-8624 or 079 962 7859.
