Last annual knitathon a success

“It was a day of fun and Knitting”

The Make A Difference (MAD) Knitters, based in Edenvale, held its annual knitathon on July 23 at the Edenvale Methodist Church.

This year was the fourth and final knitathon as the founder of the event will be going to St Helena Island to work at a newly constructed airport.

“The MAD Knitters is a non-profit organisation that aims to make a difference through kitting,” said Ms Marlene Mitchley, a member of the MAD Knitters and organiser of the last event.

The group, now in its 16th year, knits warm wool gear, beanies, jerseys and squares for blankets which are all donated to seniors’ homes, children’s homes and hospitals in the Edenvale, Johannesburg and Tembisa areas.

“It was wonderful. The day had a fantastic and lovely turnout,” said Ms Mitchley. The July 23 knitathon saw 36 women attend the event.

Anyone can join the MAD Knitters and knit alongside them, and even though it was the last annual knitathon, the group will still meet on the first Saturday of every month at the Janet Brown Hall of the Edenvale Methodist Church.

Ms Mitchley said that the group is always looking for wool and appealed to members of the community to donate wool so that they can knit winter items for the needy.
