A man who opened a case of house robbery at the Sebenza SAPS was arrested after it was discovered that he lied about his house being robbed.

The Sebenza SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Sharon Mahamba-Tsotsotso, said the man was arrested after the detectives working on the case suspected that some of the details given by the man were sketchy.

“He first told the police that on Sunday night, as he arrived home, there was a vehicle parked outside his home. When he stepped out of the car, two men approached him while a third man remained in the vehicle. The two men pointed a gun at him and instructed him to open the gate to his home. Once inside the house, the men took appliances, his wife’s shoes and her handbags and left,”said Sgt Tsotsotso.

The detectives visited the house where the robbery allegedly took place.

“They noticed that there were cameras at the house opposite the victim’s home and asked to see the footage. Upon watching the footage, the detectives could not see any other vehicle in the video during the time of the alleged robbery. There only car in the footage was that of the victim as he arrived home that night,” said Sgt Tsotsotso.

She said the footage also showed a woman leaving the house with a big bag and they decided to interview the victim again.

“When he was interviewed again, the man changed his story and confessed that there was no robbery. The man told the police that he took a prostitute home and she stole his wife’s shoes and bags after he had fallen asleep,”said Sgt Tsotsotso. The man was arrested for perjury.

She urged community members to stop reporting false cases as it is a waste of resources.

“Perjury is a crime. If found guilty, a person can be sentenced between three to five years in jail. When people report false cases, time that could have been used to solve real cases is wasted and so are police resources,” she said.
