Youngsters make sandwiches for those in need

It was a festive celebration where the learners learnt the importance of giving back and doing a good deed

Glenoaks School kicked off its 67 minutes of service in celebration of Mandela Day by making sandwiches.

Each child brought a loaf of sliced bread to school. The teachers at Glenoaks, Ms Peta Lee, Ms Stacy Schneider and Mrs Adina Feldman, received donations for spreads, packets, paper plates, spreading knives and spoons. For 67 minutes the children, with the help of teachers and therapists, made sandwiches.

“We had 220 loaves of bread and we made 1 860 sandwiches,” said Ms Peta Lee.

Deputy Minister of International Relations and Co-operation of the Republic of South Africa, Mr Ebrahim Ebrahim, visited the school where learners were making their sandwiches.

“We were exceptionally lucky to have Mr Ebrahim taking part in our celebrations.

“He is a great uncle to one of our students,” said Ms Lee.

Mr Ebrahim was detained on Robben Island with the late president of South Africa Nelson Mandela. While at Glenoaks, he walked around, spoke to the learners and answered questions while they made their sandwiches.

It was a festive celebration where the learners learnt the importance of giving back and doing a good deed.

“We hope this initiative continues to inspire our learners to keep giving back,” said Ms Lee.

Each class made sandwiches which were later boxed and distributed to institutions and areas in need.
