Engineer urges residents to be patient

The engineer responsible for building traffic calming measures on Nicol Road has urged residents and motorists to exercise patience when driving along the road.

Three traffic circles have been constructed along the road in recent weeks.

The latest circle, on the intersection of Bothma and Nicol roads, came under the spotlight last week.

Residents said the circle was an accident waiting to happen.

“Did these people not use a ruler? It is clear that this thing is not even at the centre of the road,” said one resident.

Mr Moses Mapolisa said residents should give the contractors a little more time before getting angry.

“This circle is actually right in the centre of the road. Once we have repainted the road and our work is complete residents will be okay. For now there is still work going on and we wish to assure them that their safety during this time is important to us,” said Mr Mapolisa, who is also the manager for the project.

He said as far as the preceding speed hump is concerned, they could only place on one side of the road as Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s (EMM) budget did not allow for two humps.

Ward 20 councillor Clr Jill Humphreys advised motorists to drive carefully and to exercise caution when approaching the intersection.

“There is signage, but no light. The light cable for the adjacent street light was damaged by the contractors and has to be replaced. In fact the entire light pole has to be moved. Please drive slowly in this area.”

She said as far as the circle at Nicol and Angus is concerned, once all has been painted it should be okay as the questions raised were about paving and not tar.

“The paving had been done by residents and the contractors felt it was polite to continue with same material,” said Clr Humphreys.
