Hijacking alert

"Remember that property can be replaced. Your life cannot be."

In the past week there have been two hijackings, according to Edenvale SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Jean Olckers and both incidents happened in the Avenues.

“One incident occurred when the resident was arriving home while the other one happened while a community member was parked in the street and was waiting in their car,” said W/O Olckers.

Some tips on how to survive hijackings that were provided to the NEWS include:

  •  Accept that you will lose your vehicle.
  •  Don’t challenge the hijacker, remain calm.
  •  Listen to the instructions of the hijackers, cooperate and do not become aggressive.
  •  Try gather as much information about the incident as possible without endangering your life This will help when you open a case at the nearest SAPS station.
  •  Notify hijackers if you have a pet or child in the car, as they may not have noticed it.
  •  Report stolen items such as IDs.
  •  Stop any bank cards that were lost or stolen.
  •  Blacklist your cellphone if it gets taken.

He urged community members to be alert and to be aware.
