Joburg East Express increases readership by 12 percent

Joburg East Express is the newspaper of choice for readers and advertisers alike.

Caxton recently released its ROOTS 2016 figures, with Joburg East Express coming out tops on readership figures in our distribution footprint. These survey results show we are the leader in providing local content and the ideal platform for advertisers to reach their market.

ROOTS (Readership Opinion Opportunities Trends Shopping) is South Africa’s largest urban, community level independent survey.

The survey allows us to better understand our readers and to adjust with ever-changing times.

ROOTS also provide marketers with vital demographic information for their customer base.

Readership increased

The EXPRESS’ readership in the free local newspaper media space is the most preferred newspaper.

Comparing Joburg East Express to all printed media consumed by people in our distribution footprint, such as free local newspapers, sold daily newspapers, sold weekly newspapers and weekly magazines, Joburg East Express increased its readership by an amazing 12 percent.

This increase is compared to readership in 2013 when the last Roots survey was conducted.

It is a remarkable achievement in an industry where digital is overtaking print.

Other interesting results:

  •  61 percent of the Joburg East Express footprint speaks English, 29 percent Zulu and four percent Afrikaans.
  •  81 percent shop at Eastgate Shopping Centre.
  •  67 percent have one car or more per household.

Technology

The 2016 survey results show that 62 percent of people access the internet weekly or more often, while 95 percent own cellular phones with 81 percent owning smartphones.
