#YourStory – helping out the community

Mrs Du Plooy believes in giving back to those who are less fortunate.

Mrs Rene Du Plooy (69) started her non-profit organisation We Care 28 years ago.

It all began after she treated 14 elderly residents from the Gerald Fritz Patrick Home to a fun day out at Bezuidenhout Park.

“We gave them a braai and they had such a wonderful time. Since then it just grew.

“My family was so blessed and I decided to do something for the old folk. We now look after people at Ford Court, Bertha Solomon Park Cottages, Umlazi Home, Colonel Rowland Home, De Wetshof Old Age Pensioner Cottages, Max Goodman and many others. We take them food on a Saturday morning, feed them, provide them with clothing and furniture when required. We host Easter egg hunts during Easter for the children and hand out sweet treats to the elderly at the same time. We also hand out blankets,” said Mrs Du Plooy.

“We are a registered non-profit organisation and have survived from the donations given to our organisation. We give old people food parcels and we give school children stationery for school at the beginning of the each year,” said Mrs Du Plooy. She runs the organisation from her own house.

Mrs Du Plooy believes in giving back to those who are less fortunate.

“I make the effort to cook for old age homes on Saturdays and it makes me feel like a million dollars,” she said.

She has a lot of people from the community who assist her when she hands out her parcels.

“I would like to thank all our helpers who come out and assist in handing out goodies for the old people and children,” said Mrs Du Plooy.

She hopes for her legacy not to die.

“One day when we are not here, I hope my children will continue the work we started,” she said.
