Thieves rob paramedics at gunpoint

The paramedics were responding to stabbingin Jeppestown.

Six paramedics from the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Service were held at gunpoint and robbed during the early hours of Sunday morning.

The paramedics were responding to a stabbing in Jeppestown.

“At about 4am, the paramedics responded to a stabbing incident in Jeppestown. While the crew was busy treating the patient in the patient compartment of the ambulance, two armed man arrived and pointed a firearm at them. The suspects demanded all their belongings, including their wallets and cellular phones.

“They handed the items over. The men also took the two-way radio from the ambulance and set it alight before running off. The paramedics survived the incident unharmed,” said Mr Robert Mulaudzi, the spokesperson of City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services.

The six paramedics are receiving counselling from the internal employee assistance programme office and the Chaplaincy office.

According to Mr Mulaudzi, a case was opened at the SAPS.

Mr Mulaudzi said there has been an escalation in the number of incidents where paramedics are robbed while rendering services to the community.

“We condemn it in strongest terms,” said Mr Mulaudzi.
