Residents fed up with tavern

“The Cleveland SAPS needs to place more focus on tavern and liquor outlets in Jules Street."

A tavern in Malvern is becoming a problem for residents.

This comes after two men were stabbed to death on June 25 at the corner of Jules and 1st streets at 6am.

It is believed the two were returning from the tavern. It is also alleged that the two double murder incidents were not the first to happen at the tavern.

The Cleveland Community Police Forum’s (CCPF) chairperson, Ms Alison Roberts, said the community has since highlighted numerous concerns with regards to these premises.

“The Cleveland SAPS needs to place more focus on tavern and liquor outlets in Jules Street and work closer with the Liquor Board with regards to the Liquor Act,” she said.

“A lot of crime is caused from the misuse of alcohol and the community is tired of this. Decisive action must be taken,” said Ms Roberts.

A Malvern resident who wished to remain anonymous said the tavern must be closed down.

“I think it’s better if they close it because those people died while returning from the tavern. We do not have a problem with the owner of the tavern making money but he should operate his business the same time as other businesses,” she said.

The owner of the tavern rubbished the allegations that his tavern was causing trouble in the community.

“The murder did not happen at this tavern,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Clevelend SAPS spokesperson Constable Mpho Mashakane said no one has been arrested and investigations are still underway.

“People are urged not to drink until late at night as it is not safe. If they drink until late they should walk in groups to assist each other in calling for help when they are being attacked. The investigations are continuing and no arrests have been made” she said.
