Municipal tariff increases

Municipal tariff increases came into effect as from July 1, which is the beginning of the municipal financial year.

Ekurhuleni spokesperson Mr Themba Gadebe said Ekurhuleni’s assessment rates have increased by 7,5 percent.

Based on Nersa’s approval, the electricity tariff increase is between 7,64 percent to 9,4 percent, depending on the consumption level.

Other increases are as follows:

•  Water tariff increases by 9 percent.
•  Sanitation increases by 9 percent.
•  Refuse removal goes up by 8 percent, for both business and residential.
•  There is a zero percent increase in cemetery fees for Ekurhuleni residents, but a 10 percent increase for non-residents.

“Having listened to people’s cries about the rate of night vigil tariffs for traditional churches and non-profit organisations, we have reduced the tariff from R900 to R450 per hour,” said Finance MMC Moses Makwakwa.

There will be no increase for the following services:

•  Library and information services.
•  Use of arts, culture and heritage facilities.
•  Sport and recreational facilities.

These increases will reflect on residents’ accounts at the end of the month.
