St Benedict’s College to host regional finals

Every year, pipe bands from across South Africa compete in different grades over a period of four months.

The Pipe Bands’ Association of Southern Africa (PBASA) has announced that St Benedict’s College in Bedfordview will host the final of the Regional Pipe Band Championships.

The finals will form part of the school’s Highland Gathering on July 16.

Every year, pipe bands from across South Africa compete in different grades over a period of four months.

As the season draws to a close, all the bands put everything into the last two competitions of the year: the Regional Finals at St Benedict’s College on July 16 and the South African Championships and PBASA Championship Final at Benoni High on July 30.

The festive atmosphere throughout the day is ideal for the entire family and comprises pipe bands, Highland dancers and a craft market.

The day will culminate in Massed Bands where all the competing bands play the public’s favourite tunes like Amazing Grace and Flower of Scotland.

This year, the St Benedict’s College pipe band will be travelling to Glasgow, Scotland to compete in the World Pipe Band Championships where over 200 bands vie for the ultimate prize in the land of bagpipes.

“We would like to wish them all well as they fly the South African flag high in the international arena,” said Mr Rory Bellingan, vice-president of the PBASA.

“Who isn’t moved by over 100 pipers and drummers striking up to Amazing Grace led initially by a solo piper? We look forward to seeing all the old faces and many new ones at St Benedict’s on July 16,” he added.
