#YourStory – Love at first sight

The couple met in February 1996 at Gordonia.

Mr Neville Ncala (56) and Mrs Marge Freislich-Ncala (60) faced many challenges as a couple.

The couple met in February 1996 at Gordonia, just two years after South Africa became a democratic country. It was not an easy relationship at first, as they felt that they were restricted from showing their love in public.

“When I first met her I said there is a nice girl. I was shy to approach her,” said Mr Ncala.

“A member of the staff showed me the workshop and told me to sit next to him. Then I sat next to him and I liked him from the first minute.

“Back then it was a bit of a challenge to go out together holding hands or show any romantic feelings in public. We were not sure if our interracial relationship would work out. We also feared that the community would judge us,” said Mrs Ncala.

She said even though things were still sensitive, her mother-in-law was always friendly towards her and her father-in-law was neutral to the topic of an interracial relationship.

After 11 years of dating the couple took their relationship to the next level and got married.

The are now able to go anywhere holding hands in public and they could not be more happier.

“We have been married for nine years now,” said Mrs Ncala.
