Demonstration held to celebrate Youth Day

"children are not meant to fear the police, they are meant to trust them."

Youth Day, celebrated on June 16, is a day that marks the efforts made by the youth during Apartheid to help change and improve the country.

The Edenvale SAPS and Savika dog unit held a K9 demonstration, as well as a speech on the dangers of drugs and alcohol, at the Don Mattera Child and Youth Care Centre on June 16 to celebrate Youth Day.

The day commemorates the Soweto uprising of June 16, 1976.

Sergeant Jacob Mashile, head of the social crime prevention team, organised the event. The social crime prevention unit from the Edenvale Police Station deals with domestic and family issues, while also assisting the youth.

“The small event was organised to make the children feel welcome and to entertain them,” said Sgt Mashile.
