Sebenza SAPS recover stolen items in house in Esther Park

Members of Sebenza SAPS arrested seven men at an estate in Esther Park for being in possession of stolen goods.

Members of Sebenza SAPS arrested seven men at an estate in Esther Park for being in possession of stolen goods.

The men were arrested on May 30 after a neighbour called the police when she realised her laptop had been stolen from her house.

The Sebenza SAPS communications officer, Sergeant Sharon Mahamba-Tsotsotso said police responded after getting a call from the complainant.

“We received a call from a woman who said her laptop was stolen just minutes after she left the house to go to a neighbour’s house. When the police arrived at the house, the woman said she left the house for a few minutes to go to a house next door, only to realise her laptop was not on the kitchen counter where she had left it,” said Sgt Tsotsotso.

Sgt Tsotsotso said the woman told the police officers that she suspected a man who lives next door to have stolen the laptop while she was at her neighbour’s house.

“When the police arrived, they found seven men in the house and the complainant identified the suspect. The suspect used to work as a security guard in the same complex. She also identified her laptop and officers started to search the house. During the search police found various items including three laptops, five cellular phones, shoes and clothes,” said Sgt Tsotsotso.

She said other residents who had also lost their belongings came out and identified some of the items that were found during the search.

She said the residents were able to identify their items.

“Some items were engraved and cellular phones were identified using their International Mobile Equipment Identity numbers (IMEI). The suspect allegedly used keys he had access to while he worked as security in the complex,” said Sgt Tsotsotso.
