Five suspects in two separate cases were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

On May 16, police officers received a tip-off about men in Jeppestown at the corner of Main and Maritzburg street carrying firearms.

According to Jeppe SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Richard Munyayi, police called for back-up.

“They found three men sitting in a Toyota Tazz. Metro police officers arrived to assist the police to search the three men. They found a firearm with its serial number filed off on one of the men.

“The second man had a firearm with serial numbers but without a licence, with seven live rounds. Upon searching the third man they found six live rounds in his possession,” said W/O Munyayi.

All three suspects, between the ages of 25 and 26, were arrested and taken to the police station.

Another 29-year-old man was also arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm on Heidelburg Road on Monday at about 4pm.

Police were patrolling when they saw a Nissan parked with one person inside.

They approached the car and searched the man. Upon searching him they found a firearm, with the serial number filed off. The suspect was arrested and detained at Jeppe SAPS.
