Speeding a problem in Bedfordview

The Bedfordview Community policing Forum (BCPF) hosted its monthly operations meeting at the Belgravia Bowling Club on Florence Road.

Speeding remains a problem on most of Bedfordview’s main roads.

This is according to residents who have urged law enforcement agencies to address the matter.

The Bedfordview Community Policing Forum (BCPF) hosted its monthly operations meeting at the Belgravia Bowling Club on Florence Road.

During the meeting residents urged EMPD’s Superintendent Grant Glenn to deploy more officers to the area to enforce fines and warnings to motorists breaking the law.

“People race up and down Kloof Road and many other roads in the area as if they are on the highway. We need to stop this before we lose lives on our roads,” said one resident.

Ward 20 councillor, Clr Jill Humphreys said motorists driving through stop signs must also be fined. “We cannot afford to have such lawlessness in our suburbs,” she said.

Col Mfuhli Matlala said hijackings are a problem in the Elandsfontein area. “Our challenge is that we receive reports that a truck has been hijacked, but a few minutes later, the truck is found idling, with all the goods offloaded. We urge residents to be aware and report suspicious activity in the area,” said Col Matlala.

He said residents should shy away from reporting false cases. “People are either changing the scene of the crime, or they are reporting crimes that have never taken place. Please refrain from such behaviour because you will be charged with perjury and jailed,” he said.

He said the portion of Van Buuren Road under the N3 highway was a hot spot for robberies with firearms. “People are robbed on their way to and from work in the mornings and we as police will work tirelessly until we rid the area of such people,” said Col Matlala.

BCPF chairperson, Mr Gavin Henry thanked Klopperpark residents for their efforts in eradicating crime in the area.

“In a space of one month they have manged to gather over 30 patrollers after the area struggled with robberies, and we commend that,” said Mr Henry.

Bedfordview currently has two patrollers despite calls for more residents to join.
