Man (34) arrested for robbery in Yeoville

While the police were arresting the suspect another man approached the police and fought with the police and asked them why they were arresting the suspect.

A 34-year-old man was arrested for robbery in Yeoville at the corner of Becker and Fortesque roads on May 21.

According to Yeoville spokesperson, Constable Thabo Malatjie the victim was walking home from a club when three men accosted him.

“One of the men broke a bottle and threatened him. The suspects robbed him of his cellular phone and cash. While they were still attacking the man, a vehicle came and the suspects tried to hide.

“The victim alerted the passer-by motorist who chased the suspects. One of the suspects took a brick and broke the motorist’s windscreen,” said Const Malatjie.

Police were alerted and the suspect was apprehended at a nearby block of flats hiding inside a unit.

He was arrested and detained at Yeoville SAPS for robbery and a charge of malicious damage to property was added to the charges.

“While the police were arresting the suspect another man approached the police and fought with the police and asked them why they were arresting the suspect.

“He insulted a female police officer who was also at the scene to arrest the suspect. He was uttering derogatory remarks at the female officer. When the officers arrived at the station with the suspect, the same man who insulted them arrived at the station and continued with the abuse. He tried to take the suspect out of the police station by force. He was also arrested and charged with interference with police work and crimen injuria” said Const Malatjie.

Both suspects are expected to appear in Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court soon.
