Eastgate speaks out on Dumitru’s collapse

CEO of JHI Retail, Ms Nomzamo Radebe said Dumitru collapsed due to medical reasons.

Eastgate Shopping Centre has sent messages of support to the family and friends of Ted Dumitru.

The former Bafana Bafana coach collapsed at the centre’s Woolworths store last Thursday while shopping.

CEO of JHI Retail, Ms Nomzamo Radebe said Dumitru collapsed due to medical reasons.

“On site medical services attended to the customer, but unfortunately they could not resuscitate the customer,” said Ms Radebe.

She said details of the incident are under investigation by the SAPS and centre security.

“Our deepest sympathies and sincere condolences go out to the family during this difficult time.”

Tributes have since poured in for Dumitru, whom many referred to as ‘legend’.

The South African Football Association (Safa) also paid tribute to the 76-year-old.

President Dr Danny Jordaan said Dumitru was a true giant of South African football.

Dumitru also coached, among others, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

During his time at Kaizer Chiefs he won the Premier League, the Telkom Knockout, MTN 8, Nedbank Cup and the Telkom Charity Cup.

Sports minister Mr Fikile Mbalula also paid tribute to Dumitru.

“Ted Dumitru leaves an indelible mark in the history of sport in South Africa. SA football is poorer without him,” said Mbalula in a tweet.
