Residents from Denver, Jeppe and Goerge Goch hostels took to the streets of Jeppestown this afternoon.
The residents, who were marching against poor living conditions at the three hostels, were also joined by Mangolongolo informal settlement residents.
The aim of the march was to deliver a petition to officials in Braamfontein
According to Jeppe SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Richard Munyayi, the march was cut short due to an outbreak of violence.
“When the march started, the public order unit was part of proceedings, but as the march progressed, it turned violent. Residents started vandalising property and damaged vehicles on the road. The public order unit called for back-up and the march was then stopped in Jeppestown.
“Protesters were asked to turn back,” said W/O Munyayi.
There were no injuries reported.
