One injured in R24 shootout

"A member of the public was shot, the injured person was taken to a nearby hospital."

On Friday, May 21, a member of the public was injured during a shoot-out near the Edenvale off-ramp on the R24.

“The shoot-out took place on the border of the Edenvale and Kempton Park police precincts,” said Mrs Linda Mckenzie, chairperson of the Edenvale Community Police Forum.

Gauteng SAPS provincial spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini confirmed that an armed robbery took place on May 21 on the R24,

“It was found that the gunmen were armed with AK47 assault rifles,” said Mrs McKenzie.

“According to officers on the scene, they (gunmen) followed the man, stopped in front of him and exited their vehicle. They mistook another vehicle for a police vehicle and then started shooting. The man in the second vehicle was shot and injured,” said Mrs Mckenzie.

Lt Col Dlamini said the injured man, a member of the public, was transported to hospital.

“The suspects have not been arrested. The SAPS cannot confirm whether the motorist with the “substantial” amount of cash was followed by the armed suspects,” said Lt Col Dlamini.
