#YourStory – Keeping fit and healthy

"I am happy to finish the race with a smile."

Mrs Ann Haddow, a local marathon walker, has completed multiple walks and marathons in her life.

The 70-year-old has been an Edenvale resident for the past 47 years.

“I have always been active,” said Mrs Haddow, who used to play squash as a sport, but stopped playing as she said it put too much strain on her body.

Mrs Haddow began running about 14 years ago, but it did not appeal to her, she said. She joined the Walk/Run for Life group shortly after and began enjoying the activity more.

She said that the running helped her, and her lungs have improved.

“It’s wonderful at the races, you meet so many people,” said Mrs Haddow.

“At the races people encourage the elderly, they say ‘Come on granny, you can do it.’ It encourages me so much,” she said.

Although she doesn’t run the race, Mrs Haddow competes against a large variety of age groups.

She has completed races that range from 32km to 15km.

In the Dawn to Dusk event, an event where participants walk or run as far as they can, Mrs Haddow said that she walked about 75km.

To Mrs Haddow, keeping fit and keeping going are important. “I am happy to finish the race with a smile,” she said.
