Drama fest takes to the stage

The main purpose of the Festival is to provide a learning experience

Edenvale Acting & Drama Society (EADS) celebrated its 21st High School Drama Festival this year.

The festival started in 1996 with just five schools participating and it has grown to the maximum that can be accommodated, 18 schools.

“EADS saw the need to introduce young people to the theatre and to raise awareness of the various amateur groups that exist. The main purpose of the festival is to provide a learning experience for all concerned, and to enhance the standards of community theatre,” said Nicole Wilkinson, EADS festival organiser.

The festival is held at St Chad’s Anglican Church and kicked off on May 23 and will run until May 28 with three plays performed per evening.

The finals and prize-giving will take place on June 3.

Curtain up is at 7:30pm. Tickets are R20 each and R30 for the finals tickets and are available at the door.

The adjudicators this year include Carissa Visser, a professional, qualified and experienced language educator and specialist in performing.

Carissa is accompanied by Joe Young, a young theatre maker and writer based in Johannesburg. Currently completing his final year of studies at Wits University, he works as an actor in both film and theatre.

Local schools participating include St Benedict’s College, Edenglen High School, Jeppe High School for Boys, Bishop Bavin, Edenvale High School and Jeppe High School for Girls.
