Hopital celebrates Nurses’ Day

The day coincides with the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder and pioneer of modern nursing.

The Life Bedford Gardens Hospital honoured its nursing staff as part of the celebrations for International Nurses’ Day last Thursday.

The day coincides with the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder and pioneer of modern nursing.

Nurses gathered to celebrate the day.

This year’s theme was Nurses: A force for change in improving health systems’ resilience.

Spokesperson and marketing manager, Ms Janene De Beer, said management treated the staff to lunch.

“Today is about our nurses. It’s their day and we wanted them to feel that they are special and dear to the hospital. Management served them lunch and cleaned up after them, including washing their dishes,” said Ms De Beer.

During the programme, the nurses renewed their oaths to the profession by taking the Nurses Pledge of Service.

On behalf of the doctors practising at the hospital, Dr Constantinos Sofianos wished all the nurses well and encouraged them to continue working hard.

“You [nurses] are the backbone of our health system and you touch people’s lives on a daily basis. We appreciate you. We thank you for all you do,” said Dr Sofianos.

Acting hospital manager, Ms Priya Naidoo, said care is a fundamental part of how the hospital delivers market leading healthcare.

“We place great value on ensuring that our patients are treated with respect, dignity and the empathy required. Our nurses are at the forefront of providing this patient-centric care,” said Ms Naidoo.
