#YourStory – Hard work and dedication leads to success

Hard work and dedication is a pathway to success and 17-year-old Fatouma Lo is the perfect example.

Fatouma is a former pupil from Jules High School.

She completed her matric in 2015 and obtained five distinctions.

“I have always been a hard worker. Making my parents proud was something I always envisioned for myself from a young age. Throughout the years, my hard work paid off as I was the top achiever at my school and obtained various leadership posts,” said Fatouma.

Fatouma enrolled into Jules High School in 2011.

“Jules High proved to be an exceptional school. It is because of the firm foundation they set from the onset of grade 8 that I am who I am today. Jules High has also inculcated in me the principles of selflessness, determination and responsibility.

“These principles are not confined to my schooling only, but have made me a better citizen. I aspire to impart these same principles onto others,” said Fatouma.

She said she has always been a top pupil but her teachers played an important role in ensuring that every pupil reaches their full potential.

“Words cannot begin to describe the amount of hard work the educators of Jules High put into equipping us with all that is necessary for a prosperous future. They take pride in moulding us into individuals destined for greatness,” said Fatouma.

She said it is easy for one to forget the people who played an important role in making sure you stand a chance of having a brighter future and many educators are forgotten.

“I would love to see my school receive a glimpse of the limelight and for all the Jules High staff to be commended for their hard work,” said Fatouma.

Fatouma’s five distinctions allowed her the opportunity to enroll for a bachelor of medicine and surgery degree at Wits University.

“I need to state that every one of my teachers contributed in moulding me into my current self. From the onset of grade 8 right until I left Jules High, Mrs Netshifulani, who was my English teacher, was like a mother to me. Even after leaving Jules High, we have stayed in contact. Ms Mashazi, my maths teacher, has always been my support system and has encouraged me to strive for the best. The same goes for my Life Sciences teacher, Mr Bissoon and my Physical Sciences teacher Mr Sibiya, who both dedicated all their time to ensuring we achieve excellent results.

“Above all, I owe my achievement in Accounting to Mr Sathekge, who laid a solid foundation in my junior years of Accounting right until matric,” said Fatouma.

She said she hopes to inspire other pupils who are attending the school to be dedicated to their studies.

Fatouma is currently completing her first year at Wits and says it has been a learning experience.

“Varsity has introduced me into the real world where no one tells you what to do and when to do so, a world where your fate is solely determined by you, and truly, a world that is reflective of adulthood,” said Fatouma.
