Alert officers nab two suspects

"He had no explanation for having the tools and was arrested."

Ekurhuleni North cluster Edenvale SAPS members made two arrests on May 10 in two separate incidents.

The first arrest occurred while the officers were patrolling. They noticed a suspicious person at a gate in Hurlyvale.

When the officers stopped the individual, they found a long screwdriver and a pair of bolt cutters in the man’s possession.

“He had no explanation for having the tools and was arrested,” said the Edenvale SAPS acting communications officer, Warrant Officer Jean Olckers.

In the second incident, the same officers found a suspect who was in possession of suspected stolen property to the value of R30 000.

Both arrests were indirectly related to burglary and theft.

“Well done to the officers. The suspect will appear in court shortly,” said W/O Olckers.

He added that current crimes of concern are residential and business burglaries.

Residential burglaries occur more often during the day, while business burglaries are more likely to occur at night.

According to W/O Olckers, there have been a number of burglaries reported for the month of May.

In all instances, the alarms went off, security companies arrived and left their receipts at the properties stating that nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

However, when the property owners arrived, items were missing and there were signs of a burglary.

W/O Olkers said that property owners need to ask their security companies to wait for them at the property until they arrive so that the security company can do a proper search of the property.
