New system introduced for Rea Vaya

Commuters will now be able to load points onto their Rea Vaya smartcards at R1 a point, instead of paying fares in cash.

From May 1 the City of Jahannesburg’s Bus Rapid Transit System moved to a points-based payment platform to improve customer experience.

Commuters will now be able to load points onto their Rea Vaya smartcards at R1 a point, instead of paying fares in cash.

“Our aim is to ensure that public transport in the city is fast, safe, reliable and affordable. The new Rea Vaya points system and vending machines will make travelling on Rea Vaya easy and hassle-free, while offering our customers real savings,” said Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport, Clr Christine Walters.

Commuters will also qualify for bonus points.

The more points they load onto their Rea Vaya smartcards in a single transaction, the more bonus points they will earn.

From May 1 to June 30, passengers can earn 10 percent in bonus points when they spend between R51 and R100, 15 percent from R101 to R200, 20 percent from R201 to R300, and 25 percent from R301 to R700.

There will also be significant savings as commuters will not pay loading fees. There will no longer be any need to indicate entry and exit points to get discounted fares.

Rea Vaya will also roll out self-service vending machines at certain stations to increase the convenience of loading points. Commuters will also be able to load points at cashier booths, ABSA ATMs and main Rea Vaya stations using cash, debit or credit cards, except American Express and Diners Club cards.

On July 1, when new Rea Vaya fares are introduced, commuters could earn up to 12.5 percent bonus points in a single transaction.
