Double murder, rape case moves to High Court

One suspect is said to have confessed.

The Rhodes Park double murder case is moving to the Johannesburg High Court.

The three men who were arrested for the murder of two men and the rape of a woman in the park will appear in the Johannesburg High Court on Wednesday.

The accused appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday last week, where the case against them was moved to the Johannesburg High Court.

On October 17 last year, two couples were attacked at the park by 12 men.

The men were assaulted by the attackers, who then tied their hands together with clothes and threw them into the lake.

The attackers left the men to drown.

One of the women was gang raped by the suspects while the other managed to escape.

Two of the 12 men were later arrested in Yeoville, while a third suspect was arrested in Sunnyside, Pretoria.

Sources close to the investigation said one of the men confessed to the crime and implicated his accomplices.

The Cleveland SAPS spokesperson, Constable Mpho Mashakane, said the men have been charged with murder, rape and robbery.

She said other cases might be added later.

The incident caused an uproar in political and security circles, as well as in the community.

Security at the park has since been improved following the incident.
